Kick and first road try
There are some pleasure we cannot imagine before getting it.
One sunny morning, I prepare the bike and myself for a road try. I want to know how fast the Yamaha SR500 goes. The kick is ready, I’m on the bike and let’s go. I mean, it’s not the bike that started, it’s me kicking kicking again.
Beginning of the disassembly
Finally!!!!
Wow, what a pleasure, the garage is cleaned and I finally started to work on the bike.
2 hours spend this week end.
Everything has a beginning, I started with the seat and rear fender.
Then the side covers. Easy on the right side with the screw. On the left, I discover the lock near the carb that give access to the battery. It’s rusty here. The battery is KO, I’ll throw it at the right place in my city.
I also discover that box for the tools, missing unfortunately.
I go on with the chain guard and the second rear fender. By the way, nice the holes for the airbox.
To finish, I take the rear set and the mirrors off.
I tried to take the front fender off but I couldn’t because of the caoutchouc peace that keep the brake line. I need to find a way or it’s gonna wait until I take the front brake off.
Next step, the engine oil (I’ll try not to put it on the front wheel). Then I’ll have more space. I’ll go on with the air box to clean it up.
Oil change and stuff
1h30 tonight to empty the oil from the engine and go on with the air box.
The oil is blocking at this point, after it, I’ll be able to remove the tank and and get easier access below.
500SR exposure
3h to go on with the teardown tonight.
The goal is to remove the fuel tank to get more space and then to empty the rear of the bike.
500SR exposure, second part
I’ve spent three / four hours in my garage today.
I wanted to clean the front of the bike, so I started with bleeding the front brake. A simple hose and it does the work. Meanwhile I took the exhaust out, four screws and it’s out.
Speedometer, headlight and rear wheel
Well well well, it’s been a while since I’ve published a ticket, the website is not even up to date so I fix it right now.
Carb
It’s been a while I’ve started dismantling the carb, around end of November. The time to buy the new screw hardware and a restoration kit. For those who don’t use twitter, I’ve started to reassemble the carb when I saw I didn’t have the right screws. The seller offered me to send me the right one. If you need some, just ask him, it’s really good quality http://carb-motor-screw-kit.com/
Reassembly of the speedometers
I allready started to clean the speedometer and late February, I took care of reassemby it.
To remind you, I had rust inside that I handled with Restom product and some steel wool.
Take the engine out
It’s been a while I had to take care of it! After putting the frame on wooden block, I’ve taken the front wheel and the fork out. The frame with the engine where left on the stand.
